During the middle ages, a severe famine struck Sicily, threatening the locals with starvation. Villagers fervently prayed to their patron, St. Joseph. Through this intercession, the famine was lifted and thousands were saved. In gratitude, a huge celebratory feast was held. Wealthy Sicilians open their doors to the poor and needy so all would have enough to eat.
Continuing that tradition, the St. Joseph’s table celebration continues to be a time of feasting and care for the poor.
Parishioners at St. Robert's work for weeks preparing bread, cakes and other baked goods, which are sold on the weekend closest to St. Joseph’s day (March 19). An Italian feast is also served. Funds raised during the St. Joseph’s table celebration are used to fund the parish's' food pantry ministry and other social justice outreaches of the parish.
Any members of the parish are welcome to help with the table. There are baking dates published in the bulletin each year.
